The symptoms of glandular fever last for 1-2 months, with those affected remaining depressed and debilitated for many months after.

 

Diagnosis of glandular fever is usually confirmed by the symptoms, blood samples and a throat swab.  Blood results will show an elevated white blood cell count and increased percentage of certain atypical white blood cells.  As glandular fever is a viral infection, the GP is unable to offer a specific treatment, but paracetamol and ibuprofen are recommended to ease symptoms.
