The corpus luteum does not get enough credit for its importance in the menstrual cycle and fertility.
The corpus luteum is a temporary structure. After the egg bursts from the follicle, it leaves behind an empty shell of cells. Those cells go through a transformation after the egg is released, collapsing in on themselves and changing the hormones they secrete. This collapsed follicle is what becomes the corpus luteum.
The corpus luteum secretes the hormones oestrogen and progesterone to prepare the body for the possibility of conception.
In some cases, the corpus luteum doesn’t produce enough progesterone. This can lead to abnormal spotting. When progesterone levels are low after ovulation, this may be called a corpus luteum defect or deficiency.
This can be picked up by a dip in temperatures too early in your temperatures, spotting, early miscarriage.
