Becoming a new mum can be a joyous, happy experience but can also bring about a lot of emotional anxiety. Feelings of tiredness, hopelessness, despair and fear can leave a new mothers energy depleted and it can be difficult to feel the joy of a new baby.
There can be high expectations, especially for a long awaited baby, that can easily come crashing down after weeks of sleepless nights. Those who have suffered with depression previously or those who do not have a good support network are most at risk. Feeling low can rise from a traumatic birth, difficulty breast feeding or having a sick or premature baby.
Sometimes it can be hard to recognise that you are suffering with depression, whilst busy with feeding and nappy changes. The symptoms of PND can start within the first year of your babies life.
Symptoms to look out for are;
a persistent feeling of sadness and low mood
loss of interest in the world around you and no longer enjoying things that used to give you pleasure
lack of energy and feeling tired all the time
trouble sleeping at night and feeling sleepy during the day
feeling that you're unable to look after your baby
problems concentrating and making decisions
loss of appetite or an increased appetite (comfort eating)
feeling agitated, irritable or very apathetic (you "can't be bothered")
feelings of guilt, hopelessness and self-blame
difficulty bonding with your baby with a feeling of indifference and no sense of enjoyment in his or her company
frightening thoughts – for example, about hurting your baby; these can be scary, but they're very rarely acted upon
thinking about suicide and self-harm
